Art at Redbud Cafe

Now showing at Redbud Cafe

We are so happy to have the work of Green Dog Studio – Candice Granger and Jim Bob Salazar – on the wall at Redbud Cafe. Come in to see these amazingly innovative works in clay . They’ll be on display and available for purchase through the end of December. In addition to their tiles and platters on the wall, their functional ceramics are also featured regularly at Brieger Pottery, next door to the cafe.

Wall Tiles + Platters by Green Dog Studio – Candice and Jim Bob Salazar

Wall Tile by Greendog Studio – Candice + Jim Bob Salazar

About Green Dog Studio

Jim Bob and Candice quit their “real” jobs to pursue art full time. They sold their house, renovated an old school bus for a home and built a studio out in the country in Gonzales County. Six years, two kids, 4 dogs, 1 cat, 18 chickens, 26 goats and 2 fish later, they are still living their dream of doing what they love.

In their work, they are exploring ways to alter the clay surface using various found objects: gears, bobbins, knobs, you name it, they have probably tried pressing it into clay. Although their work is similar in textures, they break free from each other in their color pallets. Jim Bob uses a monochromatic color scheme to make his precisely placed texture compliment the color of the clay. As opposed to Candice, who uses acrylics to wash the clay surface of shades of every color she can get her hands on.

They are both extremely grateful that they get to wake up and walk to their studio each day to explore their clay journey together.

All the work on the wall at Redbud Cafe is available for purchase through Brieger Pottery. Ask for assistance with purchase, at Redbud’s counter or next door at Brieger Pottery.

Communicating in Color

The artwork of Meg LeCompte and Megan Lee

About the Artists:

Margaret (“Meg”) LeCompte was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and like many other Cajuns who came before her, she “got to Texas as fast as she could.” Meg’s early childhood was spent in Houston, but in 2006, she and her family made Austin their home. Meg faces unique challenges as a young woman with autism and limited language skills, but through art, she has found an expressive outlet.  Meg takes great pride in her pieces:  The process of creating brings her great excitement and joy, and she is often heard to remark, “Wow!” or “Cool!” as the development of her work progresses.

Due to her disability, Meg was not afforded the same opportunities for formal art instruction growing up.  As she has matured and become an adult learner, Meg has pursued a variety of creative interests, from cross-stitch and knitting to music and piano.  During the last year and a half, her weekly art classes have enriched her life tremendously.  Her newfound skills have brought her greater focus and satisfaction, as well as a sense of competency and achievement not typically afforded individuals with autism.  Through her art, Meg has gained a new dimension of expressive capabilities, allowing her true self to shine.

Megan Lee was born in Austin, Texas and is an adult with Autism.  Although Megan has limited language skills, she is very competitive when playing video games and loves participating in Special Olympics in bowling, basketball and track.

Individuals with a disability are special.   Special in that they have the biggest heart, happiest smile, and that overall positive attitude that is contagious.  That is Megan Lee.  She is a ray of sunshine.

Artwork includes acrylic paints, water color, pastel, color pencils, and clay pottery.

Reproduction of selected artwork on notecards available at Brieger Pottery

Redbud Cafe is featuring the work of local artist, Angie Crowe –

Please stop by and check out these beautiful rugs, both woven and felted. Angie Crowe begins with a fleece and cards, spins, dyes, weaves or felts the fibers into these works of art.

TRADITIONAL WOOLWORK:

Karakul Rugs, Weavings and Felt • Angie Crowe

crow-3

handwoven rug by Angie Crowe

All of Angie Crowe’s work on display at Redbud Cafe will be available for purchase through Brieger Pottery, next door. The artwork will hang at Redbud Cafe through the beginning of March.

About the work:

After moving to a Blanco Co. farm in 1995, I started raising Karakul sheep for their long-staple, naturally colored wool. The hardy central Asian Karakul sheep produce two fleeces per year. The lambs are black or dark brown their first 6 months and as they age each successive coat is lighter in color. Karakul wool is a lustrous, strong fiber and is ideal for rug weaving.

The wool is washed outside after shearing, carded into batts, and spun into yarn on an old Ashford spinning wheel. My loom is a Rio Grande walking loom, a traditional rug loom used by weavers in New Mexico and Colorado.

Navajo and Rio Grande textile traditions have influenced me. Learning to play with the natural colors to find compatible combinations and bold geometric designs is a more contemporary approach and I utilize both styles in my weavings.

The felted rugs have been an attempt to manipulate the wool to produce a fresh pelt appearance.  It’s a labor of love because it is labor intensive. It’s always a surprise to roll out a felting mat after such hard work and see a solid piece of wool fabric.

Thank you MC Buchholz for your beautiful wool.
